Trouble Trouble Trouble August 7, 2008 Tech support keeps you on hold forever (44 minutes the last time for me)and really is not helpful when they finally do answer the phone. And support would be a good thing considering all the problems with the software. My music tracks cut out after one minute and nineteen seconds, only if you access them from the music tab. If you go through the file tab they work fine. I had to figure that solution myself since tech support had no clue. It scrambled the taqs in my Windows Media library during sync. I copied the files back from the player after deleting all the scrambled files again devising my own solution while I was on hold. Tech support had no suggestions. Point is, the software needs work. And they need to hire somebody who has a brain for tech support.
Great but not perfect August 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
With this device, I can currently watch two dozen feature movies (big screen, great picture), listen to 3500+ songs, display hundreds of photos, read six literature classics (in PDF), play a few Flash games, and of course surf the web (via WiFi internet access). A few things about the 605 bother me though:
- it crashes periodically and needs a reboot to fix - the battery life is disappointing (four hours of movies on average) - the max volume is weak (wear isolating headphones if possible) - there's no place on the unit for the stylus (it keeps in the included case though) - its processing speed is slow with games and especially the internet - there doesn't seem to be a copy-paste feature in the optional web browser
It's still an impressive piece of hardware, and I get lots of "What's that? That's cool!" type comments when I'm using it in public. Overall, I'm happy with the Archos 605 and would recommend it to most anyone who doesn't already have a comprehensive media player.
Interesting Device with Fatal Flaw August 5, 2008 Many of the Archos' features I loved. However, I was only able to get 2 hours of audio from a fully charged battery. I know this may not be typical, but it was a show stopper for me.
Overall a good player July 29, 2008 I agree with most of the things that were said in the reviews:
bad: No pen holder so I hardly use the pen now Its frustrating to need to buy so many plug ins. Archos seems to give you half the product, then upsale you rest of the way. no extra charger, just the "charge forever" usb terrible case for such an expensive product (again upsale)
Good: solid feel beautiful screen large HD (much better than Itouch) good OS (I didn't have problems with it. Just my luck)
Here are some other points that I noticed was not mentioned much:
The language support was worse than Ipod. It cannot simultaneously support an english GUI while displaying Chinese characters (which the ipod could, along with many other languages). You must switch it completely to chinese GUI and even then, there are some unrecognized characters. I believe this will only concern a small portion of the customers.
Also, people mention how its great to not have a software bundled so we can transfer songs like a HD. I personnally wished that there still is a software to sync whenever I change songs, change the bit rates, and/create/delete playlists on the computer and then sync immediately. The closest thing that I have found is using the Windows media player, but WMP doesn't seem to allow you to choose what to sync (i.e. just the music and not the photos). Anybody have a better suggestion?
I find the loudness to be acceptable, of course it would always be nicer if there is the option to go louder.
I mainly use it for travel, like watching movies in the hotel room when my wife goes out shopping, or listening to music on the plane.
