Good value for the casual user. October 26, 2008 I bought this camera to have something to take "quick and dirty" HD videos, like at family events of random topics. I'm using a macbook.
I have had it for about a week and have shot a variety of subjects. If the indoor subject is well lit the camera performs adequately. Video ality in low light is better than it was with my fuji 6 MP P&S. Videos import easily into the macbook as the camera is recognized as an external hard drive, and the files are quicktime compatible and can be pulled into imovie easily.
Shooting with most of the lights out or outdoors at night is not terribly productive. Also, I have a shaky hand, and the lack of image stabilization may ultimately be the undoing of this camera as a long term solution.
I have been using it to try to import and capture some VHS footage, and I have been disappointed in that. I have a 4 year old video of my wedding that is reasonably poor in quality. The camera detects static as a scene change and stops the capture so I am not able to import it with this camera, which is one of the things I was really hoping to do.
As far as the loose battery goes, I put a little cardboard shim in there to hold it in place right off the bat. No problems there, even on a bumpy bike ride on my bicycle's tripod mount.
For what I paid for it, I would buy it again, but I also got what I paid for.
Great Item, great value September 27, 2008 Great item for its value. Very clear hd performance!' definitely recommanded, however the only downside is when you recorded a video, the playback volume is quite small. However, this can be fixed if you view it on a TV or your computer. This light weight cam worked well for me as I bring it where ever I go.
Not bad for the price, but ... September 14, 2008 I bought this item recently. I have much experience with DV and HDV shooting and editing.
I know not to expect too much for this price, but I was tempted by some of the reviews/ratings on Amazon. This was to be a camera I would carry on my dirtbike and quad when riding the trails here in SE Ohio (instead of my Canon SD750).
I can only comment on image quality for HD and 5mb/8mb pictures.
HD video quality: It's really not too bad, if you have great lighting, no wind, and you don't move the camera too much (no stabilization built-in what so ever). The zoom is digital, and there's no way to disable it (it's horrible and is not smooth).
5mb/8mb Picture quality: VERY poor. Unless you're resizing the pictures to thumbnail size, image quality is worse than taking a screen cap of a paused HD video you took with this thing.
I will be returning this camcorder after the weekend. My Canon SD750 is almost as good for movies (although non-HD, but audio and movement quality is recorded MUCH better), and there's no comparison for taking pictures.
If you're broke, and don't mind the many shortcomings of this item, this may be a good solution for you.
But you're best off buying a non-HD DV cam for under $300 for much better results.
I have a Canon HV10, which is already a year or two old, and it's quality of HD video and audio is MUCH better than this item (but also MUCH more expensive).
Junk September 3, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This junk broke within months of getting it. I was so careful with this camera, but it just stopped working. The joystick part broke and now I can not change modes or play back video clips.
Just wanted to add that Aiptek gives you the run around and doesn't seem to want to honor the warranty. When called they said we need a return number. They sent us an email to replay to for the number. They never responded back with the number.
When/if we ever get the number to return the camera we pay to ship the camera to them. They won't send a replacement for 5 weeks after they receive my camera.
Great camera for the money, not many downfalls!!! August 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have spent a lot more money on high end sony, sanyo, and canon cameras and none come close to the quality of the pics and video indoors or outdoors as the Aiptek A-HD does. Now it is not perfect such as the zoom, well don't use it because the pics and video quality degrade if you use it. The pics have very correct color and saturation. But if you are indoors and try to capture little kids moving around they will most likely come out blurry. I think they have the shutter speeds set a bit slow for this but otherwise great. In short I own this for 120.00 and also a Sanyo hd1000 for 710.00 and am very happy with both and will keep them.
UPDATE: I have recently purchased a Kodak V1253 that surpasses this camera big time for pictures and even the video is better. The stereo sound is also an improvement.
