I have now 4 pcs Mini Disc equipment
Two shelf recorders (one high end) and two portables.
I am a fan of this fantastic equipment
Love the recorder, the software not so much... June 15, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I upgraded from an older minidisc recorder to the MZ-RH910 to take advantage of the capacity that iPods and the like have been offering for a while now. The beauty of minidisc technology is that it grows with your music library without having to necessarily upgrade the hardware. All you have to do is buy more discs. A single Hi-MD disc can hold a lot of music, depending on how much fidelity you're willing to sacrifice. I've found that 192kbps MP3 format gives me decent sound and allows me to dump around 12 hours of music to a single disc. What's not to like? The recorder itself is easy enough to use, although some time spent reading the manual will save you some frustration when you're trying to navigate the menus. The downside to Sony's otherwise formidable product is their less than stellar interface to it. SonicStage is the main program and gives you more options than their scaled down Simple Burner. If you just want to dump CDs to a disc, Simple Burner is the way to go. It's easy and stable. SonicStage's commendable features are diluted by its slow performance and tendency to crash or hang without warning(I'm talking Windows here.) The latest version, 4.0, appears to address some of the problems with 3.x. It's slow, but even when it appears to be stuck, most of the time it finds its way back(patience is the key). I think it needs a major overhaul or even a complete rebuild. In any case, there's not much in the way of third party support for Hi-MD, so for better or worse, you get what you get when you buy the recorder except for upgrades from Sony's support site. Software bugs aside, I have no regrets about my purchase and expect to get years of happy listening from this recorder.
great, but interface is weak June 3, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is slightly awkward to use - the ipod interface puts it to shame. Small buttons, and multi-step processes for getting around the functions. BUT, it is much more flexible. Getting CD's into it is much faster and easier than with the ipod, and it has infinite storage capacity and a choice of fidelities. It is great for a musician - I use it to record concerts and rehearsals with excellent results. If you are technically adept, it is a the superior format for mp3 stuff, recording, portable data storage etc. The battery life is fine for play back - longer than ipod. For recording, it consumes less power with the old MD's rather than the new gig md's (same fidelity choices, just less space on the older ones).
Battery endurance May 22, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am satisfied with the functions of this product, however the endurace of the battery (chargable) is short. It says it lasts 33 hrs, but if I want to record something the product indicates "lack of energy to record" in about after 15-20 hrs of usage, which is why I don't give it a perfect score.
DON'T LET THE THREE STARS TURN YOU OFF>>>READ MORE>>> May 16, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just got my player yesterday, so I can not give a fair review, as I've not had the time to test everyting out yet, so please don't let the 3 stars scare you off. I really love this player, actually, I just need time to let it earn its 5 stars, if it will. So far the player is very intuitive. The sound is good. I love Hi-MD, now, in addition to standard MD. Recording onto it is easy enough. I must say, too, that sonicstage is not bad so far, despite what other reviewers have written. That's my twopence about the matter. Anyway, I'll give another review in about 6 months to a year if I remember...hehehe. But good so far. LONG LIVE MINIDISC!!! DOWN WITH THE EVIL EMPIRE ADORNED WITH GLOSSY WHITE EARPHONES!!!
