Great as CD player,HORRIBLE radio January 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The strength of this product is it's sound and apparent durability; the glaring weakness is its tuner. I can't remember having a radio, modern or old, with a worse tuner. In a crowded FM market like Chicago's, the ability to select between close frequencies is critical: this tuner can't do it. It's noisy, and imprecise rendering the radio almost useless. If you're playing CDs only this may not be important; but if you're in the trades or like to play at the trades, look elsewhere. Unless you drag along CDs or an iPod (and why no dock, just a mini plug?) everywhere, this is not the unit for you. I should also note the clunky transformer, that doesn't conveniently store anywhere; it's halfway down the length of the power cord and doesn't stow nicely in the compartment at the back of the boombox. Since this box is no lightweight or compact unit to start with, I'm not sure why the transformer wasn't integrated into the box in the first place. Nice idea, lousy execution.
Indestructible, so far January 2, 2008 My 6-year-old uses this and hasn't figured out a way to destroy it after several months.
excellent choice for worksite November 29, 2007 We're using the Sony on work sites, where it competes with noise and dirt. This Boombox holds its own! Makes the day go faster, which ain't half bad!!
Good - Except for the Cord November 27, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is almost the perfect jobsite radio. The D battery supply works well since the other jobsite radios require that you own a certain cordless tool to operate their units. I can get two days on a set of D batteries and do not need to crank up the generator unless we are cutting or grinding.
The handle feels cheap - partially because the unit is so heavy and the transformer on the cord adapter is retarded. A built in transformer would have been too easy to do, what is another 1/2 pound when the transformer on the chord is stored in the secret compartment anyway.
The sound is much better than the Bosch box even though the Bosch box looks way more cool. This unit could use a GFI and a whip antenna like the Box has.
Overall, this is the way to go. I hope Sony upgrades the chord, antenna handle and adds a GFI in the next version.
Good value - has everything November 2, 2007 This boombox arrived quicker than the music CD's ordered at the same time. It came quick! Nice machine. Sony seems to have pulled it off again. I have had this machine for only a few weeks so far, but my initial reaction is that it is a great value. JB - Reno
