5 out of 5 stars Works Great   August 2, 2008
It's just the right size. Easy to program and simple to operate. It doesn't have the extra junk like an AM-FM radio. That's one of the reasons I picked this one. Recharges the rechargeable batteries so it will work when the power goes out. Only had it a few days and it notified us of a severe thunderstorm warning while it was off.
No complaints at all!

5 out of 5 stars Gives peace of mind, easy to use.   August 1, 2008

A few weeks ago I ordered this NOAA weather radio with SAME. Getting a NOAA radio was recommended by a local TV Meteorologist. A few minutes ago, it went off with it's first alert.

Set-up of the radio was quick. I had looked up the county codes and frequencies on the NOAA website before the radio arrived. Really simple and only took a few minutes. With this particular radio I was able to turn off alerts for stuff I didn't want to bother me like flash flood alerts. (Flash flood alerts are pretty common this year in my area, but not really a concern in my neighborhood.) It also has battery backup, and you can put rechargable batteries in it and it will keep them charged. Handy.

There have been alerts for other counties recently, but not us. The radio did its job and didn't alert me to those warnings.

An alert was issued for a severe thunderstorm watch for this and surrounding counties a few minutes ago. Apparently immediately, the radio sounded a siren for 10 seconds then started playing the broadcast alert. Also, an LED showing the severity (warning/watch/advisory) is blinking and continues to blink for the duration of the alert. A message describing the alert also scrolls across the screen. I noticed a message on the TV after the radio alerted. I wouldn't have noticed the TV alert as it was only on for background noise. I don't actively watch TV during the day, or much at all really. I mostly use the DVR or movie channels if I'm watching. That's how I missed the alerts for a local tornado last time. I was clueless until the citywide airhorns went off. That was scary as I wasn't prepared.

So, I'm very happy with my choice. Oh, also love that I can listen to the weather at any time by hitting the "listen" button. That tunes into the frequency of the NOAA weather channel and broadcasts current weather conditions and forecasts.

I super highly recommend this radio, or any radio for that matter. It really provides a sense of security.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the job   August 1, 2008

This is a great weather/alert radio. The directions were clear and easy to follow. It does everything the Midland WR-100B radio does, plus much more for only a few dollars extra.

On this radio you can delete watches that you do not need or wish to hear. Another big plus is that the volume can be changed. This is a biggy if you are going to place it beside your bed. It has individual lights for watches, warnings, and advisories if you should miss an alert while you are out. It has a big enough screen that missed messages can be read easily.

I also own the Midland WR-100B radio, which is a dependable, but very basic radio. The First Alert seems to have more quality built in and is easier to use. This radio would be my first choice.

5 out of 5 stars Works as promised   August 1, 2008

We have been using this product for over a month. It has worked exactly as promised so far. We set it so that non life threatening warnings have the audible alarm blocked. We have never gotten an audible alarm under those circumstances. No tornado warnings have been issued by NOAA for our area since we got the unit to test the auible alarm in a real life emergency situation.

One word of advice, do not block the audible test signals, They are programed at the factory not to sound. We blocked them and then got a message 10 days later that the unit has not received any watches, warnings or test signals There is a 10 day no signal alert that comes on automatically. Once we let the test signals through, there have been no such message and no audible alarm during the test.

I found this unit very easy to program, my husband did not. We are considering getting another unit to use when one of us travels since some areas we may travel to are more rural and may not have local sirens. Another nice feature is that we disconnected the unit for a week with no back up battery and all of our settings for alarms remained the same when we plugged the unit back in. The only thing we had to do is set the correct date.

Added note August 4: We've just experienced our first real tornado warning today. The weather radio sounded the alert about one minute before the local sirens sounded. The unit is on the main floor of my house. We heard the alarm well on the first floor, but not on the second floor. I had the alarm volume set at level 3, so I have turned it up now. Otherwise I may purchase another unit for the second floor. Definitely worth the investment.
