5 out of 5 stars Four Point Five Stars   November 10, 2008
I purchased an Asus Eee 900 w/64gb SSD + 2gb RAM on eBay back in Mid September 2008 (for which I paid $420 inc shipping, which was a true steal of a deal at the time because the 64gb SSD alone was selling for more than two hundred fifty dollars).

My Eee 900 has XP home and runs pretty much flawlessly. I intend to reload it with an Nlite version of XP Pro that i made, reducing the OS to 188mb which will quicken it up greatly.

My advice upon purchasing an Asus Eee 900 or 901 is to get a good 10400mAH battery (make sure the cells are made in Japan), get a CLA (ciggarette lighter adapter), and upgrade to 2gb RAM immediately.

The smallness of the Eee 900 & 901 takes a little getting used to (be ready for some typos if you've wide tipped fingers), but all in all it is a great note book computer.

You will want to download EeeCtl and install it, which is a small program which gives you control over the fan speed, over the CPU, and over the screen brightness (even allowing you to boost the brightness to twice the normal maximum). I have found that the EeeCtl program very much helps to extend the battery life if you use it correctly.

The smallness of the Asus Eee 900 makes it an excellent computer for backpacking with. I found an excellent 15w folding (pliable fabric in woodland camo pattern) solar charger on eBay and use it to charge my Eee 900. The same seller also makes other sizes, including a 35w and a 40w folding solar unit - which will fully drive an asus Eee 900 because the 900 series notebook only uses 36w total power.

Add to this a couple of large HCSD cards to load all your goodies onto and the Asus makes for a very nice, and easily modifiable notebook computer (do a Google search for mods to the Eee 900 and 901, or just go to the Eee user's forum and check it out).

I hope this helps!

4 out of 5 stars buy the 20GB hard drive model or larger.   November 4, 2008

I like asus products. No real complaints about any of them. Except this one.

I bought it cause it was small and everything about it.

But my only gripe, is that the SSD is NOT 12GB, its 12GB in total, but split into a Master and Slave drive, Master is 4GB one the Operating system is on, and the 8GB is for everything else. This is alright except when you try and use windows update, it takes up all the remaining 600MB of space on the Master drive. So I installed windows on the 8GB drive, find out that is horribly slower than the 4GB. So what do I do now? No idea... ebay maybe.

2 out of 5 stars Returned   November 2, 2008

Actually, I returned this product. I bought it for the purpose to use SKYPE. I was disappointed because the video was behind the voice about 3 or more seconds. Since SKYPE comes loaded on it, I thought it would be much better quality. I tried several different ways to remedy this, but with no success. I REALLY wish it would have worked, because I LOVED the size and everything else about it. I bought a MacBook instead--Love it.

2 out of 5 stars The real deal   October 30, 2008
This computer is short of being awesome for the simple fact that the hard drive is actually two smaller drives. I loaded antivirus software and updates after unpacking and it was already low on memory in the c drive. Meanwhile the d drive is huge and empty. A real fumble because the battery life is extremely good, although the keyboard is too small and the touchpad always picks up movement from your palms when typing. It would also freeze sometimes. I deleted all unnecessary programs to no avial, still not enough space. Got my money back though, so Amazon is golden in that respect and I will always buy from them before anyone else for real expensive items.

5 out of 5 stars Love It   October 29, 2008

I bought this laptop specifically for a 3-week vacation in Europe, and it's my new favorite computer. It's the one I'm using now to write this review. After having used this computer every day for three weeks to write a travel blog and back up photos I can say that this computer is everything I was looking for, and I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a small, lightweight laptop.

When the Eee PC 901 first arrived I was a little worried about the size of the keyboard. It's small, for sure, but after just two or three days your fingers will be hitting exactly the right keys without a problem. One issue I've encountered a lot while typing is the cursor jumping around. I'll be typing and then all of a sudden the cursor will have moved to a new location so that I end up typing in the wrong place. I think it may be a result of my left thumb brushing up against the touch pad while typing. Whatever the cause, it happens fairly frequently. It's the only problem I have with the keyboard. I use the touchpad exclusively, but you can get a bluetooth mouse if you prefer a wireless mouse option.

A lot of people worry about hard disk size. I have another big laptop with a giant hard disk on it, and only 12 GB of disk space is being used. My Eee 901 has a 12 GB solid state drive capacity, which is plenty. If you're worried about the hard disk space on this mini laptop you should consider what you'll be using it for. It certainly can't be used to store all your digital images at the same time, or for installing lots of different programs. I'm used to using Microsoft Word for word processing, but the Microsoft Works word processor works just fine, and has the same look and feel as Word. So there's really no reason to install Microsoft Office. You'll save space by making decisions like this. The 20 GB of free storage space available at YoStore is useful if you're running out of space and don't have any other means of storage (which is unlikely). It's easy to use, too, but you need an internet connection to use it.

The primary benefit of the solid state drive is that it's durable, with no moving parts that can break. Also, the solid state drive makes the computer absolutely silent.

Right after I purchased the laptop I read complaints on user forums about the factory-installed WiFi card. I was concerned it wouldn't work very well so I purchased the Gigabyte AirCruiser Mach AG Mini Card, that supposedly picks up WiFi signals really well. I haven't installed the new WiFi card because the factory card seems to work just fine, reporting a signal strength of Very Good when it's 50 feet away from the wireless router in our den. On our European vacation the card was picking up WiFi signals just about everywhere we went. There's a network cable port if you need it as an alternative to WiFi.

The built in camera is cool and can be used to record video. Combined with the pre-installed Windows Movie Maker you can make and edit a simple video (with a title screen and end credits) in just a few minutes even if you've never done it before.

Battery life is really good at over 5 hours. I've noticed that the converter in the power cord can get really hot when the computer is being used while it's plugged in. I'm not sure if this is just a 240V issue, or if it happens on 120V power outlets as well. Even on 240V, though, the issue can be resolved by letting the converter cool down, and then by plugging it in again while the laptop is turned off. When the laptop is off, the converter does not get hot at all.

At just over two pounds this thing was easy to carry around in our day bag every day of our vacation. It's power cord has a 240V converter, so the only thing we needed was a 240V surge protector to use it safely in Europe. Check out the Voltage Valet EuroSurge.

All in all, I love the Eee PC.
