Better than Expected. March 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Range as previously stated is not near 8 miles - fuzzy at 1/2 mile but works ok for 3 to 4 miles - but for the price not bad. Work great on small trips and short distance - battery life so far is pretty good over 8 hours on one charge.

The items arrived on the date specified. But after charging them i found out that one of the units did not transmit or recieve. This was disappointing as we wanted to use them at Disney world instead of our phones. Was told I could exchange them but problem was that we were leaving in 4 days no way to get them back in time.
Battery life aweful December 1, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
These were rated for 8miles - and if you've ever done any research on these type of 2-way radios...regardless of the rating, if you're able to get a 1 mile range from them, you're a lucky few. I fully expected that disappointment. However, what I did not expect was that the rechargeable batteries that it came with were aweful. On a full charge, it barely lasted a trip to the mall on less than mild usage. Btw...there is no indicator to say if it is fully charged. I charged it for the recommended 10 hrs. Anyway...I had another pair of refurb Uniden that I got for almost nothing...that pair was just as good, if not better than this one which I paid $45 including shipping. Not a recommendation.
8 Miles? What a joke. July 14, 2007 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
These radios are labeled as having an 8 mile distance "under ideal conditions", but what exactly is "ideal"? Do you have to be 8 miles apart in the middle of the ocean (NOTHING in the way)? We can't get these things to work for ONE mile, let alone 8.
I bought an extra set for my brother and his wife, and they have the same exact problem, so it's not just my set. In fact, his set won't even hold a charge for more than 5 minutes.
The golden rule for consumers really holds true here - you get what you pay for! If you want two-way-radios that REALLY work for 8 miles, you'll have to spend the money for a much better set. If you only need them for close proximity, under 1 mile, these will suffice.
**Edit**
So it turns out I got not only one, but THREE bad sets of radios from this seller... upon further inspection, we realized that each of the 6 radios were going dead in a matter of 20 minutes, no matter what batteries we used. I'm glad Cobra is such a professional and trusted company - after one quick phone call, I was prompted to send the three sets back, and in around 8 business days I received 3 new sets that actually work longer than 20 minutes. It wasn't the radios, it was the seller apparently trying to rid of defective units. 3 different sets of radios that ALL went dead after 20 minutes? Coincidence? I think not. Don't buy from this seller.
Unfortunately, the transmission distance of 8 miles is still a crock, but at least they don't die after 20 minutes.
Wish there'd been more reviews... June 16, 2007 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
Okay, first question, why so few reviews? You go on to Amazon.com for the most obscure products, like "Ladies Nylon Ant removers," (remove those pesky ants from your Nylons before you dress in the morning ladies) and you'll see 72 reviews from mostly satisfied customers.
This product for some reason only had one other review. Not sure why. I ordered based on that one review. Mistake.
I got my Cobra PR170-2VP Micro Talk GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radios from Amazon in excellent time, very quickly, I thought. I followed the directions to charge up the batteries, and use the product. But for some reason, the sound kept cutting out. I also had problems with functioning radios. I would get about 5 minutes use out of a radio, before the "battery" seemed to stop working. I wasn't sure.
I tried completely new batteries in both radios, and only one consistently worked. Also, the battery indicator never showed "full" so I wasn't even sure if that meant "full battery" or not completely charged, or whatever? Since only one radio was working, it was difficult to tell if it even worked. And how soon before it mysteriously stopped working.
Very poor quality, and I am returning them today. Not recommended. Perhaps I got a bum pair, but like my fellow reviewer from June, I will be also going on vacation soon (to Disneyland) but right now, in June, and I've no time to wait for a refund, or return. I've purchased another pair of Cobra's from Circuit City, which is a step or two up from this model. And they work perfectly!!! And Circuit City even matched this price, as they'e pricing card was incorrectly displayed and they had to lower the price from $50.00. My lucky day.
