5 out of 5 stars A Party Entertainer's perfect piece of Equipment   June 21, 2005

I bought this product after thorough research and sending back another product that was just too large to carry easily.

If you are a magician, clown, or belly dancer, or some other kind of party entertainer this is the perfect portable, all-in-one durable piece of equipment on the market at this time for dragging to gigues. The guitar amp is also for large pin microphone and has a mixing knob (thus it does Karaoke: you can sing with the music). You will not find this in any other description, not even JVCs. I had to buy the product to see what it really can do.

It has no-nonsense buttons, you don't have to read the instructions to operate it and the sound is clear and LOUD.

A great item for the investment, I think I can will it to my kids.

5 out of 5 stars This should be titled preview really   April 8, 2005

I had the privledge of owning an urban grey RV-B90 manufactured in July 1998. I used to take this boombox to work and it sounded FANTASTIC! Since I have eclectic tastes in music my co-workers suffered but I didn't care because no matter what I played it sounded wonderful. Really, everything from Lamb of God to Miles Davis' A Tribute To Jack Johnson to Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon sounded excellent. All was bliss till 04/19/05 when sadly the CD player stopped reading disks. Since then I've been searching high and low for a replacement and nothing even comes close to the 'boom. NOTHING! In a fit of desperation I've been contemplating building something but sadly my electronics knowledge is lacking. After googling "JVC kaboom" to see if I could buy a used one I saw this intrigueing entry about the RV-NB1 from an official JVC press release. Apparently due to customer inqueries and the high resale value of the discontinued RV-B90 series JVC decided to re-release it as the new RV-NB1!! Hooray! Owing to my experience with the orignal Kaboom I feel there are 3 areas of concern that I hope JVC will address with the follow-up to this re-release. First, an anti-skip cd player. Because the Kaboom was able to play at very high volumes without too much distortion the CD player would skip with high bass output. Secondly, the fragile exposed radio antenna. Admittedly I hardly used the radio but the broken off antenna tip and retaining clip from my old Kaboom did not make me very happy considering the retail price of the unit. Lastly, the metal clips for the shoulder straps were too weak. I carried my Kaboom to and from work and after a couple of years the metal swiveling clips opened up and dumped my Kaboom from my shoulder onto a concrete floor (no doubt contributing to the cd player's demise). I had to go to Home Depot and cobble together a solution. The title of this is preview because I haven't taken delivery of my RV-NB1 yet...it's on it's way from NY after I ordered it from Amazon on April 3. I can't wait! I've given the item 5 stars even tho I haven't actually heard the particular unit because since it's a re-release it should be the same as my old unit.

5 out of 5 stars This Box Rocks   March 29, 2005

If you need big sound and the ability to play MP3 discs, this is the one to get. I work in a factory and it is a noisy environment. There are also other radios and boomboxes to compete with. I wanted a radio that could be heard above the ambient noise and also had the ability to blow away my coworkers' boxes! I have not been disapointed. The JVC RVNB1 gets very loud. At full volume it is painful to the ears if you are closer than about three feet. The subs pump out very powerful and clean base. You can really feel the
puffs of air being ejected from the ports. It surprises people when they walk by and feel the air coming out. The subs have a seperate volume control so the effect can be modulated. As for the overall quality of the sound, i would rate it as very good. I usually listen to rock/pop music at work and this radio excells at this type of music. The powerfull bass really helps. I haven't really listened to classical or jazz so i can't say how they would sound but it should be good.
One of the main reasons that prompted me to buy this product was it's MP3 capability. I did alot of research and there really aren't alot of options for MP3 boomboxes that put out big sound. maybe this will change as more products come out, but for now i think this is your best bet. i made several discs using my PC and they worked perfectly in the JVC unit. it takes about 30 seconds for the unit to read the disc before it plays. It's really nice to be able to have a CD that can play up to 8 hours of music. this is especially helpful in a work place, as the boss may not like his workers fiddling with boomboxes.
Another cool feature of this beast is it's remote control unit. This fits into a handy pouch on the shoulder strap, so as not to get lost. It is a full size remote that can control all functions of the player, including the volume of the subwoofers. I find it very useful at work as i am often restricted in my movements- ie:
working on an assembly line several feet from the radio. the layout of the controls on the remote are very logical and easy to use. the same can be said of the controls on the radio itself.
In summary, this is a great boombox. If you need a big boomer that can play MP3s it may be the only way to go. It is rather spendy at $250 but i found it to be a good value in it's performance and features. It is heavy at 23 lbs. I usually carry it by the handles on the ends rather than the shoulder strap. Either way, it is not easy to haul around. If you are looking for portability this is not a good choice for you. I don't leave my radio at work as i fear it will grow legs. Hauling it in and out from my car each day is a hassle but i put up with it because of the performance of the radio. I really don't want to be without the great sound it provides. This unit looks to be very tough in construction and i am expecting it to last a long time. I have only had it for about 3 months but so far so good. I like the locking mechanisms on the CD and cassette units. Speaking of cassettes, i have never used mine so i can't comment on that. One thing i don't really like, apart from the bulk and weight, is the
overall appearance. It is grey and light grey in color. I find it rather drab. I was actually considering doing a paint job on it to dress it up. Anyway, these are my oppinions and impressions of this fine product. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for big sound and MP3 capability who is willing to put up with it's weight and bulkiness.
