JVC RV-NB1 Kabooom Series Boombox January 5, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I use it to play classical music cd's, and the sound is very very good. The sound is what matters most to me, and I am extremely pleased. I needed something portable. Although it is heavy, I don't mind moving it around. My only caveat is, if you need to carry your boombox around, or if you need to move your boombox from place to place a great deal, this model's weight will make that difficult.
Kitchen Kaboom January 4, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
These folks were not kidding when they designed this unit. My Wife uses ours in the kitchen, and the effect can be felt all over the house! The sound quality is on par with home stereo units costing much more. The subwoofer is a great feature that enhances the overall sound. With most players of this sort, the bass is seriously lacking, and you miss alot of the music. If you desire a unit that rocks, this is the one.
VavaaLaBOOOM! December 7, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This here Boombox is Awsome!(heavy though, good on the biceps) One of the staff members at a middle school in Spokane WA, let me borrow the boombox to play CD's. At first sight. I couldn't help falling in love with this machine. All the featrues are easy to operate, as a Assistant School Custodian, playing it, it shook the Gymnasiun walls, rock'n out, so much that I forgot my task on cleaning. Oh well at least I got my work done faster. Now I will have one to call my own, and use it at one of my elementary schools. Y'all get this boombox, it is worth every penny!
EXCELLENT CD PLAYER, POOR RADIO November 5, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As others have indicated with their reviews this product is an excellent CD player with fantastic bass. If you only want a CD player this would be an excellent choice - which is why I rated it 5 stars. If you want a good radio receiver this would be a poor choice.
Huge Sound from a Huge Boombox September 16, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Pros: Bass (quality + quantity), Volume, plays mp3s, nothing like it on the market Cons: Big and heavy, not portable, FM reception, battery life Best For: University students, cottages, boats, RVs, construction, rooftop/backyard parties, people who need music while they work
The Sound: This thing just rocks. It pumps out the bass with authority. The bass goes deep and loud with a quality that is unheard of in ANY (1 piece) boombox on the market. It was the first boombox to deliver subwoofer like bass when it first came out in the mid 90's (then without mp3 capability), and it only had one competitor at the time (the Panasonic). While the Panasonic did sound a bit better than the JVC through he midrange and treble, it could not touch its bass performance. Reintroduced in 2005 with the ability to read mp3s, it has literally no competitors.
If you are an audiophile (audio snob), the sound quality is amazing for a boombox, but it really can't compare to a real stereo with good speakers. If you listen to it up close and personal, you can tell its limitations, but used for parties, at the cottage, rocking out, or background music, it sounds as good as you'd ever want.
Sound controls: You can tailor the sound to your taste in three ways: 1. Super Woofer volume control, 2. Equalizer presets, 3. Active Clear Sound (ACS).
The Super Woofer volume control is a big knob just like the volume control and goes from 1-6. It usually sounds best at 3 or 4. 5 adds extra bass when you need it, but 6 is just excessive.
You can select from 4 EQ presets: flat, beat, pop, and clear, but you cannot create a custom EQ setting if those 4 are not to your liking.
ACS seems to have a love/hate relationship. If you're listening to it up close and personal, you can easily tell that it is artificially manipulating the sound. But if you're using it for parties / background music, you'll never notice and like the effect (makes it sound clearer from a distance amidst the background noise).
Convenience: This thing is basically a big tube. Almost like a small duffle bag or a really long gym bag. It's an unwieldly 25 lbs that you carry over your shoulder with a strap. There is no "handle" on top -- you have to carry it with a handle on either side. So it isn't a typical boombox that one would carry around easily. This thing is portable in the sense that you can take it to or from the cottage or set it up in the backyard or on the rooftop for a party and take it back inside. But you don't want to be carrying this thing around on your shoulder for more than 5 minutes. And when you're using it on battery power (not that I've tried), it's not going to last more than a couple hours.
But on the other hand, for a system with such huge sound, you could easily use this as your main system unlike many other boomboxes. This thing actually has better bass than some mini systems (the ones with separate speakers and built-in subwoofers). I think it would be great for students, for example, who could take it with them for their dorm rooms and back home in the summer much more easily than a full stereo system.
Conclusion: If you need something for college, the cottage, or backyard parties, and you gotta have competition level bass, this is your only choice.
