DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS ONE! April 21, 2006 16 out of 34 found this review helpful
I ordered the 420 and received the 430. The 420 got GREAT reviews & that was one of the reasons why I ordered it. The company that I ordered it through tried to push the 430 off as a better model. True, it is newer, but it's certainly not better. One of the Sony reps even told me that it wasn't born from the same prototype of the 420. This unit was purchased to replace a Panasonic that I intended to sell. I liked the fact that it only takes one AA battery and it has the TV band. I also liked the fact that it gives you the written title of each track.
I inserted the battery and put in an audio CD and pressed play. Instead of playing, it started repeatedly beeping and it wouldn't stop. Even pressing stop wouldn't get it to stop. I opened the lid and the CD was still spinning and it wouldn't stop after several presses of the stop button. I finally had to manually remove the spinning CD. The spindle kept spinning, so I removed the battery and then put it back in. I got the CD to work, but THE UNIT selects the play order, not the order that I put it in when I burned the CD. This is a very inconvenient feature, especially if you're listening to an audio CD which is supposed to play in the correct order. The sound for the CD play was as good as or better than my Panasonic, though I thought the loudest setting wasn't loud enough for when I may be rollerblading near traffic.
I brought it to work and planned to listen to one of my favorite TV shows. It doesn't play the ABC station. That was a big detriment. The sound on the rest of the TV stations was lousy. The cord doubles as an antenna. Even extended to it's maximum was still full of static and I thought it was ridiculous that I was expected to stand there holding the cord out at an arm's length in order to get any decent sound. I didn't bother messing with the AM/FM and did not intend to re-burn any of my CD's in Atrac format. I was already too turned off by its performance so far.
In the four times I took the unit with me in my backpack, two of the times it turned on by itself because it must have got bumped. I think the on button for the TV sticks out too much, so it is more easily bumped. It has a handy remote, but it ended up switching the stations on me twice because it got bumped and I ended up having to pull the unit out of my pack anyway to figure out where it was supposed to be. It has a hold function, but it didn't work any of the times that I tried it. I think there should be a separate hold button on the remote. In my opinion, the directions were not very clear about the remote connection. It took me awhile to figure it out, and I'm not even blonde.
The battery life was good, even after it sat playing in my truck for two hours after it got bumped.
All in all, I was very displeased with this unit and I am sending it right back where it came from. :-( If I could have given it zero stars, I would have.
