Had lots of problems December 16, 2008 I returned this item after 3 frustrating days of trying to make it work. I am somewhat of an IT professional and have built several computers. This unit was even worse then the Pinnacle unit which I thought was as bad as it gets. I ended up having to restore my computer to an earlier date which thank goodness was available.
Not impressed - Could only receive 1 Digital Channel December 16, 2008 Played with this for 2 weeks, at different locations, 1 channel is not worth it. If all you want is a DVR, you can plug this into you cable service, but as for off the air - forget it...
Software needs work December 12, 2008 I bought this item because I wanted to be able to record HD programs. That function worked perfectly however there were some other things that bugged me enough that I ended up returning the item. I have an older Hauppauge PVR250 that is much more responsive than the 950Q. The 950Q channel changing is really slow which I found to be too irritating to use. The picture quality was excellent though and the 950Q found all the QAM signals on my Cox cable (San Pedro, CA). Unfortunately I could not get the QAM stations to show up using Vista Media Center. I tried some of the Vista patches available to fix that but was not successful and did not want to completely re-install Vista (recommended for the patch installation). In the end I purchased Tivo to do my HD recording and so far am loving it.
Nice December 11, 2008
Pros: Excellent quality (when using coax cable), flawless integration with windows media center on my vista laptop, crisp HD picture - very fluid and rich in color.
cons: apparent 2 or 4 second 'freeze' moment when changing channels - although this may be with all tv-tuners... i dont know.
a very nice unit, overall. i bought a new laptop that has 640gb (2 320gb drives) and i can now use my laptop as a dvr. a really good price plus since happauge makes MOSTLY tv/av related computer components, you know they're good at it.
this unit is better than the 'built-in' one offered by the manufacturer. i would definitely reccommend this unit to anyone who wants a usb tv tuner.
TV Anywhere -- Almost Always! November 30, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I originally bought the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q TV Tuner as an accessory for a new laptop computer that didn't offer an integrated tv tuner at the time that I ordered it. The unit configured perfectly and easily and I received prompt assistance from a Hauppauge representative for the one question that I had. A short USB extension cable is provided which protects your laptop from the heat generated by almost any TV tuner and I strongly recommend its use.
Ultimately, the tuner turned out not to be as useful for the laptop as anticipated because of a lack of OTA channels in our area and the fact that if I am near a cable coaxial connection, I have no need to watch TV on a laptop.
Determined to get my money's worth from my investment, I connected the USB Hauppauge to a desktop computer that was in a room with a cable connection and signed up for a free account at Orb.com. That was a good move. Now I have access to a TV anyplace where there is a computer with online access (providing, of course, that my home computer is on and connected to the internet) and the video and audio quality is excellent.
Because of the USB connection, this type of unit offers tremendous portability advantages over integrated TV tuners. You can always remove it from a desktop and pack it in your laptop case if you are likely to be in an area where there are OTA channels. If you buy a new computer, you need not buy another TV tuner as long as this works. And, having it plugged in a few inches away from the USB slot is also much healthier for your computer.
I'm thoroughly satisfied.
