Compact Size & Quiet Operation Make it Nice for Travel January 2, 2009 I purchased one of these a few months ago overall have been very happy with it. Here are some pros & cons:
Positive Aspects: ----------------- - Very small size. This is especially nice for travel. - Very quiet. - USB powered. No external power supply required. - Western Digital is the manufacturer. I have found Western Digital equipment to be very reliable. - Windows XP automatically recognized the drive and installed it. - Affordable price for a large compact drive.
Negative Aspects: ----------------- - Data transfer rate was not terribly fast, especially when transferring large files. - Came formatted Fat32. I had to reformat it NTFS, as I frequently transfer files larger than 2 GB, and Fat32 does not support this. This of course is not a problem with the drive. Fat32 was obviously used so it could be used across multiple platforms.
Overall I found it to be a very good piece of hardware. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a physically small drive to transfer files or for travel.
Easy For Girls To Use January 2, 2009 For those of you who don't know much about technology this is really easy to use. Drag the thing from your computer screen and let got on the passport screen. All done.
Smart choice December 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got this HD with possible Army use in mind. I wanted something compact, durable and large enough to fit map files which run in tens of gigs.
WD Passport is a good choice and I'll describe the reasons below.
This model has one cable to power/connect to internet. The cable is a standard mini-usb, a very common type. this can not be overstated because this feature alone gives it flexibility, portability, and makes it very user friendly. I own another, older external HD by western digital which as a power cable, and a separate computer cable and its a whole different story.
I bought mine for 90 to 100 dollars in may 2008, which is an excellent deal.
Secondary features are size - its small and fits in side a backpack easy. Has bright LED light that ensures I know when its on. Does not require drivers to plug into PCs. (do not recall if I needed anything for mac though). On the back I used the space to write my name in a permanent marker, in case I violated security and lost it somewhere.
It looks attractive, white with blue LED is a great combination. I think mac users and other white laptop users will be pleasantly surprised when they put it next to their machine.
Features I'd like to see: +password protection. I'd like to have a lock on my HD where a pin is needed to enter it. +gps tracker capability. i'd like high end models to be trackable in case they are lost. +rubber case to cushion falls.
Made Christmas a little less merry December 29, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
I received this as a Christmas gift, and none of my laptops will even recognize it. So I wouldn't trust it to back up my files even if I could somehow get it recognized. Now that I'm reading the other one-star reviews, I see that it has power issues. I won't be buying anything from this manufacturer.
